A traditional sweet that is a feast for the eyes

A traditional sweet that is a feast for the eyes

Some food is enjoyed at first sight… but false expectations are never far away !

On the way from home to school we used to cycle past a a shop selling traditional Japanese sweets. Fukushimaya wagashi, near Sugamo station, has been in business for 6 generations, selling all sorts of desserts. Everyday we used to stop in front of his window to look at those superb colourful wagashi that were always on display. One day the owner overheard us, and as he also speaks French, started talking with us.

These sweets are usually enjoyed with a cup of green tea. Most of them are made with rice flour and a red bean past filling. So, no matter the shape and the colors, the taste will always be the same. Something you don’t expect when you eat things looking so different. But to be honest, although I’m not a big fan of their taste, I keep buying some from time to time, just because they look so beautiful !
