Modern, unconventional temple by Kengo Kuma.
Temples in Japan are usually very conventional. Their location makes the most of their originality, along with some architectural details or particularities. Musashino Reiwa Jinja however takes a very particular approach and offers a very modern architecture. But make no mistake: this is not a touristic attraction, but a real temple.
Located in the Tokorozawa Sakura Town complex in Tokorozawa city (Saitama prefecture) the temple looks upon the operation of the Sakura Town operation, and defines itself as a sanctuary of “Cool Japan”. It aims to act as a place pf prayer, a resting place filled with water and greenery, a place where locals and visitors can meet.
Two deities are enshrined here: Amaterasu Omikami (the main one) and Susan no Mikoto who are collectively known as the divine authority manifested in all kinds of arts.
But the most striking aspect of this temple if of course its unconventional, modern architecture designed by Kengo Kuma, one of Japan’s most renowned architect known for the Olympic stadium in Tokyo and many more projects worldwide. It mixes traditional religious elements and a modern approach. Its most striking elements is undoubtedly this big torii, lit at night with water mist being sprayed around for a very unique mood. And yes, the colours change, on a seemingly random basis.
