Matsue castle: exceptionally authentic
Almost all the castles you’ll see in Japan are copies, modern “look alike” versions of an old castle long gone. The worst exemple in my eyes being Osaka castle, looking like a castle but with concrete inside and elevators…
Only a small dozen original castles survived to this day. Matsue Castle is one of them, making the visit really worth something. The castle was finished in 1611 and survived earthquakes, fires, and anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji era. You can visit the outside and the inside of the castle. Admission costs a little bit less than 500 Yens for foreign tourists.
